A number of flood warnings are in place across Yorkshire after Storm Claudia brought torrential rain throughout Friday and into the early hours of Saturday.
The Environment Agency (EA) said flooding was expected on the River Aire in Castleford, along the River Ouse in York, on the River Nidd in Hunsingore and at New Mill Dike in Holmfirth.
It said the Foss Barrier was now in operation and advised York residents to put their flood plans in place.
Meanwhile in South Yorkshire, Rotherham Central station was closed due to the risk of flooding and Sheffield SuperTram services were also affected with suspensions between Meadowhall South (Tinsley) and Parkgate.
EA flood duty manager Ben Lukey said “significant river flooding impacts” were possible throughout the day.
He said: “Environment Agency teams are out on the ground to clear any debris from watercourses and preparing to operate flood defences when needed.”
In York city centre, residents in riverside areas were advised to start acting on their flood plans with expected flooding on King’s Staith and from Lendal Bridge to Millennium Bridge.
The EA said water levels would continue to rise throughout the day, peaking on Sunday morning.
Network Rail said it had taken the “proactive step” to shut Rotherham station until midday on Saturday to avoid damage to signalling and telecommunications equipment in the event of the River Don flooding.
In Castleford, high river levels are expected to cause flooding at Allerton Ings, Barnsdale Road, including the A656 Barnsdale Road between Allerton Bywater and Castleford.
The public are advised to avoid using low-lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses.
In Holmfirth a flood warning is in place at New Mill Dike at Lydgate and New Mill, with properties potentially affected at Holme Lane, Holme Crescent, Huddersfield Road, Sheffield Road and Mill Drive.
In North Yorkshire, there is a warning in Hunsingore with potential for flooding at the Old Cornmill.
