A developer has been granted planning permission to refurbish one of Leeds’ most recognisable buildings.
The Tetley building, on the city’s South Bank, is set to be transformed to include a market hall, events space, offices and a roof terrace.
Developer Vastint, which bought the former brewery from Carlsberg in 2022, said it would become a “crown jewel and focal point” for the surrounding Aire Park development, due for completion in 2030.
Stephen Lindley, Vastint UK managing director, said the “unique” project “ensures a major landmark continues to play an active role in the future of Leeds”.
The location was the home of Tetley’s Brewery in Leeds for nearly 200 years until it closed in 2011, with the application approved on Friday.
Mr Lindley said: “As custodians of this important piece of the city’s history, we have been working hard to ensure we continue the building’s evolution to meet the needs of its community, while also preserving what is an important part of the city’s architectural, business and cultural history, for another century.”
Kirkstall Brewery, which has operated from the building since April 2024, will vacate the premises in 2026.
The upper floors of the building have been earmarked for event spaces and 13,000 sq ft of office accommodation, with the building’s basement set to be brought into public use for the first time.
The ground floor will house a market hall space.
A spokesperson for the development said they expected the building to close for refurbishment next year, with the project taking between one and two years to be completed.
