Marks & Spencer which closed its city centre store in Bradford’s Broadway shopping centre in 2024 is to return to the city – but on a much smaller scale.
Planning documents show the chain is hoping to open a convenience store on the outskirts of the city centre.
The former Stanley Cars site on Canal Road is being redeveloped as a petrol filling station with EV charging bays and a convenience store to be operated by M&S.
The details emerged in an application for planning consent for an advertising sign for the site.
The filling station, which will be operated by BP, will also include hydrogen refuelling bays for lorries and a Wild Bean Café.
The café is BP’s own brand of coffee shop, and is often found in filling stations at motorway services alongside M&S Simply Food outlets.
A decision on the advertising consent application is expected in March.
Approved by Bradford Council in 2022, the application for the site described the development as a “modern day roadside service” that would be built on a major route through Bradford.
According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the application said: “The proposal is considered to be an appropriate form of development for this prominent site on one of the main thoroughfares in and out of the city.”
Marks & Spencer has been approached for a comment.
