The Managing Director of LNER has apologised to passengers caught up in today’s (Friday) incidents on the East Coast Main Line between North Yorkshire and London.
David Horne warned that there may be issues tomorrow (Saturday) as a result of the disruption caused by power lines coming down at New Barnet, between London and Stevenage. (See main picture)
Tonight services are delayed by up to 60 minutes or cancelled.
The Bank Holiday weekend will also see the main line closed between York and Northallerton with buses running instead.
The network will be busy as many people will have decided to delay travel plans because of the disruption tonight (Friday).
Mr Horne said: “We are prioritising capacity and running as many trains as possible, even if this means some services are running late. Sorry again.”
Friday 22 May Disruption Latest
Major disruption across the LNER route (also affects Grand Central and Hull Trains) due to multiple disruptive incidents.
- Damage to the overhead electric wires between London Kings Cross and Peterborough
- Failure of the electricity supply between Durham and Darlington
Trains running will be delayed, altered or cancelled at short notice for the remainder of the day.
If you choose to travel today and your train has been cancelled, you will be able to use your existing ticket on another service.
Trains are very busy today, so it might say seats are unavailable. You can still board.
Saturday May 23 Engineering work
Major planned upgrade work is taking place between Darlington/Northallerton and York over the May Bank Holiday weekend.
Work is happening on the following dates:
- Saturday 23 May
- Sunday 24 May
- Monday 25 May
On these dates, southbound LNER services from Scotland and Newcastle will terminate at Darlington or Northallerton.
Northbound LNER services from London King’s Cross, which would normally continue to Newcastle or Scotland, will terminate at York.
Rail replacement coaches will be in operation to help you travel.
No Grand Central train service York – Thirsk – Northallerton to/from Sunderland.
Buses replace trains on TPE services to Thirsk and Northallerton from York too.
Journey times will be extended, so it is recommended that you plan ahead and allow extra time.
Please note that on Saturday 23 May, trains and coaches are expected to be extremely busy and you may be required to queue to board a coach.
Boro Fans travelling to the match at Wembley are advised to use alternative means of transport if they do not have booked tickets.
