Escape Room Hull’s owners took to Facebook to announce it closed on August 31 and encouraged readers to support local businesses

A Hull escape room that has been in the city centre for just shy of 10 years has closed its doors, citing the rising costs of running a small business. Escape Room Hull has been in Ferens Court on Anlaby Road for nine years and 10 months. The owners took to social media to say that as of Monday, the doors are now permanently closed.
A Facebook post thanked those who had visited over the last decade, and reminded everyone to support local businesses when they can as “they might not be around forever”. The post said the pair of owners are “gutted” to announce the closure. It added that rising costs “across all aspects of running a business” were the reason for it having to cease operations. It said utilities, rent, wages and business rates have made it difficult for independent businesses to survive.
It continued: “Times are tough for so many people at present. We’ve been incredibly conscious of this and have had to somehow find a balance between passing on our ever-increasing costs and remaining affordable. In the end, it’s proved impossible to do.”
The business opened on 11 November 2016 and employed 12 staff at its busiest. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Hull locals kept the business afloat when lockdown restrictions allowed. The owners thanked those who visited saying “you wanted to come out and start living life again, and we welcomed you back with open arms”.
However, costs have become too great and the owners said they “can’t keep putting prices up”. The post then thanked everyone who has visited over the years.
It read: “To everyone who has visited us over the past 9 years and 10 months – thank you. We hope you had as much fun trying to escape as we did watching you try. If you can, please support your local businesses. From shops and bars to restaurants and escape rooms. The love, time, effort and passion business owners put into creating something special is so hard to put into words. But they might not be around forever.” The post was signed “Matt and Jack – Escape Room Hull”.
