A top York store is to shut – and York’s main Post Office will go with it too.
TG Jones on Coney Street has launched a closing down sale.
Banners in the window say “Store Closing Down” and “Everything Must Go”.
The retailer took over the former WH Smith, which had traded for decades in the street, in 2025.
But in July, TG Jones secured court approval for a major restructuring, which it said would lead to the closure of around 150 stores and hit hundreds of jobs.
The chain of high street shops was renamed to TG Jones last year after being bought by Modella, while WH Smith kept its group of stores in travel locations such as airports and train stations.
Its disappearance from Coney Street also means the loss of York’s main Post Office.
It moved into WH Smith in 2019 after the stand alone branch on Lendal closed.
A sign in the window says it will close on Monday 19 October. However a Post Office letter about the branch’s “unplanned closure” gives the last trading day as Wednesday 14 October.
“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause,” it says.
“The provision of a Post Office service to our customers in the local community is important to us, and we will continue to work hard to restore services in the area as soon as possible.
“We would welcome any applications from potential retail partners interested in running a branch locally on our behalf.”
The nearest alternative branches are on Colliergate and Micklegate.
An advert is now live looking for applicants to run York’s main Post Office. The closing date is 10 September.
“Post Office Ltd is looking for a successful retailer to incorporate a Post Office Main into their existing or proposed business,” it says.
“The exact layout and design will be agreed with you to suit your business.”
The estimated Post Office fees are in the range of £123,600 – £164,800 per year.
“These contracts will be awarded directly as Post Office Ltd must act with extreme and unavoidable urgency to protect essential services relied upon by communities,” the notice says.
