Works to deliver low-carbon heating and hot water to city centre buildings will begin next week as part of the Hull Heat Network, Hull City Council announced. The “essential works” will begin on Wednesday 9 September and run until Sunday 11 October and will involve several streets in Hull City Centre. Those driving into the city will be unable to use Lowgate’s car park for up to eight weeks as the pipework is installed and are encouraged to find alternative parking.
The work will involve installing underground pipework along a section of Lowgate, Guildhall Road and Wilberforce Drive. The council said planned diversions are northbound via Alfred Gelder Street and George Street or southbound via Freetown Way, North Bridge, Great Union Street and Drypool Bridge.
Lowgate car park will be closed to allow for the installation of pipework. Alternative parking can be located nearby in the George Street car park. Further information on city centre car parking can be found on the Travel Hull website .
These improvements are subject to the current repair works by Yorkshire Water on George Street being completed, to ensure minimal disruption to city centre road users.
During the works, the following roads will be affected:
- Lowgate will be closed for five weeks between Guildhall Road and Alfred Gelder Street.
- There will be no access from Wilberforce Drive onto Lowgate, Guildhall Road or Alfred Gelder Street.
- Guildhall Road (from Quay Street to the Wilberforce Drive and Lowgate junction) and the eastern gate to Hannover Square will be closed throughout the works.
- Access to Guildhall Road from The Wilson Centre side will remain open.
The work will be limited to between the hours of 7.30am and 5pm from Monday to Friday. The council says “some overnight or weekend work may be required”. These works are weather dependent, and the dates are subject to change, the council said.
