East Riding of Yorkshire Council has added more than 100 homes to its affordable housing stock. 97 new homes will be built at Hull Road, Withernsea, and 26 more at Poppy Place, Eastfield Road, Driffield. The council said the homes will be delivered “over the next five years” and will form part of the council’s “wider ambition to increase the supply of affordable homes across the East Riding”.
It will buy the homes from developers Vistry (Withernsea) and Keepmoat (Driffield) through the council’s Housing Revenue Account (HRA), a ring-fenced fund financed through council housing rents rather than council tax. The HRA allows the council to “reinvest in existing homes, develop new housing opportunities, and sustainably grow its housing stock to meet local needs”, the council said.
In Withernsea, 73 homes will be added to the council’s rented housing stock, while 24 properties will be made available through shared ownership, which can give buyers an affordable route into home ownership. The Poppy Place development in Driffield will also include a mix of rented and shared ownership homes.
The new homes will help to meet increasing demand for affordable housing across the East Riding. The acquisitions have been part funded through Homes England grant funding. Once completed, the homes will be allocated in accordance with the council’s housing allocations policy.
