A new library and public space in Huddersfield will open later – the first part of a £260m revamp of the town centre.
The development, on part of the old Piazza Shopping Centre, replaces dozens of shop units with a large public square.
But, a covered food hall in the old market building that was supposed to open in summer 2026 has been delayed until next year.
Kirklees Council decided against appointing a private operator to run the venture, taking the decision to manage the operation themselves.
The new square includes fountains and seating and will act as a space for public events, according to the local authority.
It’s part of a regeneration plan called Our Cultural Heart, with the first stage costing £60m – money borrowed by Kirklees Council to fund the development.
David Shepherd, executive director at the council, said: “The new Queensgate Square will allow us to host events of up to 3,000 people.
“But that’s not the main purpose, we want this to be somewhere people come to enjoy Huddersfield with their friends and family.”
The scheme includes a new library building overlooking the site.
