He has denied causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving with a trial scheduled for next year

A young motorist has appeared in court accused of causing the deaths of two of his four teenage passengers by dangerous driving – and seriously injuring four other people – in a horrific New Year’s Day crash. Two of those injured were the other passengers in the car and the others were two adult people in another car.
Alfie Bristow, 19, of Asselby Road, Knedlington, near Howden, denied causing the deaths of 16-year-old William Herbert, of Howden, and 18-year-old Oliver (Olly) Mitchell, of Elloughton, by dangerous driving on January 1 last year. He was driving a VW Golf car on Staithes Road, Preston, near Hull.
Bristow also denied causing serious injury by dangerous driving to four other people, two of them teenage passengers in his car and two of them a man and a woman in another vehicle. He is said to have lost control of his car shortly before the crash.
Bristow appeared before Hull Crown Court for a first hearing there. The case was adjourned for a trial listed for August 31 next year, with a provisional time estimate of eight days.
Prosecutor Laura Marshall gave brief details of the case to the court. Bristow was represented by Timothy Pole and bail was extended until the next hearing. The public gallery was full for the hearing and police officers also attended.
At the time of the crash, the police said that Bristow’s other two passengers, both seriously injured, were a girl aged 16 and a 17-year-old. The crash was said to have happened at about 1.20am when a grey VW Golf being driven along Staithes Road, away from Preston, was in collision with a black Vauxhall Grandland travelling towards Preston.
Emergency services attended but William died at the scene. Olly died later in hospital from his injuries.
A 62-year-old man, a passenger in the Vauxhall, was taken to hospital with serious injuries. The driver, a 34-year-old woman, suffered serious injuries to her arm. Two other passengers suffered minor injuries.
The driver of the VW Golf, Bristow, was aged 17 at the time of the crash. He was, at the time, arrested but he was later released on bail, said police.
Bristow appeared before Hull Magistrates’ Court on August 4, when the case was sent to Hull Crown Court. He had been allowed unconditional bail.
