Rebecca’s spreadsheet includes the dates of purchase, how much it cost per litre, how much fuel she bought and the total cost.
She says she uses a variety of petrol stations in York and North Yorkshire to purchase her fuel, but most often fills up at Tesco in Clifton Moor.
When she bought her Renault Scenic car in 2015, diesel cost 97p per litre.
A quick examination of Rebecca’s records shows times when the price per litre has doubled.
Since 2010, major events have been cited as reasons for causing spikes to fuel costs for motorists in the UK, most recently the conflict in the Gulf and Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine.
Rebecca continues to fill up on a regular basis for commuting to her tearoom in Easingwold and has recently changed to a hybrid vehicle.
She says a friend’s husband also tracks the costs of running his electric car.
“If you go full EV, how do you calculate? I guess there’s a point to doing that, but I won’t be for years as I’ve just bought a new car.”
Her unusual hobby has only just become known to her friends.
“My best friend now knows I log my costs, but I don’t think she did before. She found out after an interview I did.”
She admits that despite keeping an extensive log of her purchases she is not sure if anyone would find it useful, but would happily share the data with them.
“It’s just the miles on my car and the prices,” she says.
