He left the victim feeling ‘disgusted’
A Hull man targeted and sexually assaulted a woman – leaving her feeling shocked and “disgusted” by his “unpleasant” behaviour. He at first denied doing anything wrong but he later finally accepted what he had done, Hull Crown Court heard.
Joshua Archer, 33, of Dent Road, west Hull, admitted charges including two offences of sexual assault. He originally denied the offences but he changed his pleas to guilty during a trial.
Stephen Robinson, prosecuting, said that the guilty pleas came after a trial had already started. The woman’s video interview evidence had been shown to the jury but Archer pleaded guilty before she was due to give evidence in person to the court, said Mr Robinson.
The case had been adjourned for pre-sentence reports and Archer had been allowed to remain on bail. An indication had been given at an earlier hearing that he was likely not to be jailed.
The guilty pleas were acceptable to the prosecution. Mr Robinson said that the sexual assaults involved Archer intimately touching the woman without her consent.
“She challenged him about this behaviour,” said Mr Robinson. “There could be no doubt that she was not consenting to this behaviour.” She later said that she was “disgusted” by what Archer did.
Archer was arrested by the police and he was interviewed. He made no comment to questions during a second interview.
Dale Brook, mitigating, said that Archer pleaded guilty at several stages. “He has no previous convictions, either before or since,” said Mr Brook.
The behaviour by Archer was “unpleasant” and he put his own narrow sexual needs first. “This has been hanging over him for a long time,” said Mr Brook.
“There is every reason to suspect that he will never be in trouble again.” He had suffered problems. There were references for him.
Archer was given a one-year suspended prison sentence and 15 days’ rehabilitation. He will have to register as a sex offender for 10 years and he must pay a £149 victims’ surcharge.
