BBCMore than 70kg (154lb) of sweets have been stolen from a shop window display in an early morning burglary.
The Shambles Sweet Shop in York was broken into in the early hours of Monday, police confirmed, with its window panes smashed and shelves removed.
Owner Adam Scott said that although he hoped to reopen soon, trade was looking “pretty terrible” for the week until the windows could be fixed.
“Why they’ve done it, I don’t really know – it’ll cost me more to fix than they’ll ever make selling the sweets,” he said.
“It’s not even greed because some quite random things were in the window last week – it’s hard to understand.”
A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson confirmed that the incident had been reported by a member of the public just before 05:00 GMT.
“We are investigating a commercial burglary at the Shambles Sweet Shop on The Shambles in York,” they said.
“An investigation is now under way which includes forensic examination which has taken place at the shop this morning.”
